Patricia Mary Phillips
Born December 7, 1918, passed on July 13, 2012, at the age of 93. She was the wife of Davis Nemire Phillips, who passed in 1973; daughter of Charles Theodore Sr. and Mary Agnes Kelly Leach; sister of Charles T. Leach Jr., Ann Brady, John Leach and Bayard Leach; and mother of baby Paul - all preceded her in death.
Patricia graduated from Wilmington High as Volina Leach in 1937. Always her own person, she became "Patricia." Davis and Patsy met at Hearns Bakery and married July 31, 1941. While Dave served as a medic, Pat worked at the Experimental Station. A walker, Pat saved her streetcar fare, salary and Dave's military pay, later used for a Banning St. duplex. In 1951, they moved to Woodcrest.
Patsy was known for her fashion style, physical prowess, and faith in her Lord and His mother Mary. She enjoyed working and seeing others at work – road construction was "good the men are working." Always "styling", she was the manager of Town & Country, a women's clothing store on 9tth St., where Mrs. Phillips had a following. Like her mother, Pat was good with numbers and generous. Widowed, Pat funded half of her grandchildren's college educations.
Patricia had the Irish gift of gab, leaving strangers beaming. She had a tender heart, insisting that one never make fun of an "affliction," but instead to "say a little prayer." Prayer and time was her solution for most everything. Pat loved her home, a good car ride, a nice lunch, her coffee and chocolate, and the company of family and friends.
Pat is survived by children Robert Davis Phillips of Boca Raton FL, Maryanne Phillips Bellman and husband William of Newark DE, and Deborah Phillips Nelson and husband Gary of Boulder CO; grandchildren Matthew Phillips Bellman and wife Katherine of Philadelphia PA, Laura Phillips Nelson of Boulder CO, and Jeffrey Phillips Nelson of Fort Collins CO; and Aunt Pat's devoted care givers niece Nancy Phillips Hudson and family - Kay Outten, Edward Milam Jr., Janet and William Finch, and James, Susan, Clare, Sean and Conor Blessington.
Special thanks to Fr. Timothy Nolan for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick; to her dear neighbors; to the caring medical personnel; and to the kind strangers and wait staff. Pat always said flowers were for the living, not the dead. Please consider doing as she often did and slip someone a little something to brighten his or her day. Services were held privately at Gracelawn, as Patricia requested.
