Phyllis McCarthy, age 84 of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at home. Phyllis was born in County Mayo Ireland, January 3, 1934.
Phyllis worked at the State Hospital in the Research Department for six years and at Allied Kid Company for four years, and then went to work at the Vicmead Hunt Club on Owls Nest Road for over 41 years.
Phyllis was a member of Corpus Christi R. C. Church where she volunteered at the annual carnival and helped out in the cafeteria. She was active in Boys Scouts Troop 65 at the Elsmere Presbyterian Church in the 80's when her son, Michael, was a Boy Scout. Phyllis enjoyed summer vacation at Rehoboth with her family, cook-outs in the backyard with family and friends, and holiday in Ireland.
She was the daughter of the late Timothy O'Brien and Ellen (Murphy) O'Brien of County Mayo, Ireland.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Edward A. McCarthy (Bud) July 2007; her sister, Elizabeth O'Brien; two brothers Gabriel and Mark O'Brien; three sisters-in-law, Eileen and Betty McCarthy, and Josephine O'Brien; three brothers-in-law Thomas and Timothy McCarthy, and Benjamin Lander.
She is survived by her beloved son, Michael E. McCarthy and his wife Vicki; her brother Jack O'Brien of County Mayo Ireland; her sisters-in-law, Mary Lander, Katherine McCarthy, and Ellen McCarthy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi R.C. Church, 901 New Rd., Elsmere on Tuesday, March 13 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call at Krienen Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Tuesday, March 13 at 9:30-10:30. Interment in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
