Obituary for John S White

Print
Another member of the “greatest generation” John S. White age 89 of Newark DE passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 4th with his daughters Nancy and Jeanie by his side. From his birth in Sharptown MD on April 18, 1929 to his death, he lived life to the fullest.

On September 16, 1950, he married Jean Theresa Maichle. Together, they had three daughters and a son. They raised their family in Elsmere where he enjoyed his vegetable garden, playing horse shoes, hosting backyard parties for their neighbors, and Sunday afternoon barbecues. He was a loving father who took great pride in taking care of his family and his home.

He was very proud to be a union plumber, working over 40 years for Local 74. Having gained expertise in his craft, he excelled in his field and had the opportunity to work on many of the major construction projects in the State including the Christiana Hospital and Saint Marks High School.

In 2011 after back surgery, he moved to Newark to live with his daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Joe where he happily resided until his health failed him last March. He was well known and liked by everyone, spending many days on his favorite bar stool at Mulrooney’s Tavern or Hutches Pub shooting the breeze. He was a great story teller who was never wrong about anything.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean and his son John. He is survived by his daughters, Jeanie White and her husband Chuck, Nancy Cronin and her husband Joe, and Susan Stake and her husband Rob; his six grandchildren, Jennifer, Ernest, Leanne, Jessica, Erin and Rachel and six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ethan, Avery, Greyson, Charlotte, and Lillian.

Family and friends are invited to attend a service on Monday, September 10 at 11:00 at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere DE with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at All Saints Cemetery.
