Obituary for Phyllis J. Johnson (Slecker)
Passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, August 4, 2015.
Phyllis was born September 7th, 1930 in Wilmington, DE to the late Robert S. and Emma (Orth) Strecker Sr.
She attended Wilmington High School, then worked at Wiltex and Kaumagraph while raising her family. Later she worked at Stuart Pharmaceuticals (ICI).
Phyllis was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Wilmington for over 50 years. She participated in many of the outreach programs including; the food bank and cooking their spaghetti dinners. Phyllis was also very involved with the Claymore Senior Center. She not only served as a board member but volunteered her time and talents with the Basket Bonanza. Phyllis could always be found baking for their fundraisers. She always enjoyed traveling on their family vacations; especially on her husband’s WWII Army reunions. Phyllis’ favorite pastime was caring for her grandchildren. She also spent her time crocheting afghans, playing cards and travelling with the Golden Girls of Elsmere.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Robert S. Johnson Sr. (1998); her daughter, Linda Kristine “Krissie” Bean (2003); and her siblings, Robert, Mark, Harry, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Joanne, and Harriett “Butch”.
Left to cherish Phyllis’ memory are her son, Robert S. Johnson Jr. (Aline); daughter, Terri L. Schmidt (Jason Walker); grandchildren, Tara Brohawn (Jeff), Michael Schmidt, Joanna Szotkiewicz (Mike), Andrew Johnson (Ashley), Ryan Johnson (Jessica), Josh Howard, Grace Walker; and her 5 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service for Phyllis at Zion Lutheran Church, 2101 Lancaster Ave., Wilm., DE 19805, on Monday, Aug 10 at 11:00am. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilm., DE 19805, on Sunday, Aug 9 from 3:00-5:00pm. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions to be made in Phyllis’ name to Zion Lutheran Church or the Claymore Senior Center, 504 S. Clayton St., Wilm., DE 19805.
