Bob Bromwell Volunteer of the Decade We are saddened by the news of the death of Bob, a longtime Boys & Girls Club volunteer. Always a dedicated community member and familiar face around the Clubs, Bob was recognized by the organization in 2001, as the “Unstoppable Volunteer of the Decade”. He retired from volunteer service in January 2011 after 40+ years of working and service with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. Bob and his doctor had decided it was time for him to relax and enjoy some “me” time. But for those of you who knew Bob, retirement did not mean staying out of the Club. Bob could often be seen visiting our staff, or waving to the kids in the halls of the Club. Bob joined the H. Fletcher Brown Boys Club at the age of 9. As a teen he worked at the Club in the locker room for 50 cent an hour, which he gave to his mother to help with the household expenses. When he quit school at 16, Joseph Dulin, who at the time was CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, pressured Bob to go back to school. Bob finally relented and returned to school and graduated from Brown Technical School. While working at Witco Chemical, he volunteered at the Club in the evenings and on weekends. Bob committed himself to the youth of Delaware through his active volunteer involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. Bob served in a number of capacities; helping with programs, coordinating Christmas toy drives for needy families, assisting with maintenance, golf outings and numerous other events. He logged more than 30,000 volunteer hours. In 2001, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware established the Robert Bromwell Volunteer Achievement Award in his honor. Before Bob retired from the Clubs, he was asked what the Club meant to him. His answer was, “I would either be dead or in jail, if not for the Boys & Girls Clubs. The Club has always been a good place for kids. I am paying back what they did for me. I want to help the Boys & Girls Clubs be the best I am able to, and for me that’s giving them my time.” Bob, we thank you for tireless service and commitment to Delaware’s youth. Our kids, the staff, the Clubs and the community are better for having known you. You will be missed.
