Life Story for John J. Ciafre

John passed away on October 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family after a two-year battle with cancer.
John was born May 20, 1941 in Wilmington, Delaware, one of six children. He attended St. Peter Elementary School and William Penn High School. He served six years in the Army National Guard and two years in the US Army Corps on Active Duty where he received a Certificate for the Berlin Crisis Service Medal in 1962.
John was the Owner/Operator of JC Contracting, Inc.; the Chestnut Run Supermarket, Inc., and President of the Chestnut Run Merchants Association. He was also the Owner/Operator of Wood Studio, Plan-It Supply and the Doll House Beauty Salon, and still found time to enjoy a round of golf with family and friends.
John was a member of St. Anthony Club, St. Gabriel Lodge and St. Anthony Society. He is well known in the community as the Founder and President of the New Castle Italian Heritage Foundation. The Foundation plans to erect a memorial stone in the Spring of 2017 with the names of the Italian families who were born in Italy and immigrated to New Castle.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Ann Jeffery, his brothers Ron Ciafré and Joseph Jeffery.

He is survived by his life partner and fiancé Catherine Hanson and his daughter Justina St. Claire (Ciafre) Ritchie. He will be dearly missed by his 2 granddaughters Lyndsay Pritchard and Brittney Verucci; his 4 great grandsons, Jordan Verucci, Jagger, Skylar and Sage Simpkins.

John is also survived by his 2 sisters and one brother along with their spouses, Gloria and William Gail, Anne M. Jeffery, Raymond and Madelyn Jeffery, his good friend and Uncle Joe Gotto and 4 nieces and 8 nephews. He will be missed as well by Catherine’s daughters, their spouses and their children whom he loved as if they were his own: April and Kevin Wieand, their children Olivia and Owen; Holly and Ben Frederickson, their children Charlie and Kate; and Lindsey Hanson.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 5th and Harmony Streets, New Castle, on Tuesday, October 25 at 11:00 am. Friends may call at the church from 9:00-11:00 am. Interment will take place in All Saints Cemetery.
