Obituary

Deacon Ralph Baynard, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening of July 12, 2019 at Milford Center in Milford, Delaware. He was 90 years old.

He was born April 19, 1929, in Marydel, DE, the sixth of 11 children born to the late Marie and Fletcher Baynard, Sr. He received his formal education in various Delaware schools, from which he proudly graduated. He enlisted and served in the United States Army for two years, which included a tour of duty in England. He then switched to the U.S. Army Reserves and retired, after serving his country in that manner for more than 20 years.

After a lengthy courtship, Deacon Baynard married Marguerite (Peggy) Scott, with whom he was blessed to share the births of their seven children. In the early years of employment, he worked at Rusty’s Gas station and various stints in the construction industry. Then, God blessed him to become employed at General Foods (Kraft), where he worked for more than 20 years, until his declining health caused him to retire.

Mr. Baynard was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of his beloved Union Baptist Church for more than 40 years, where he sang on various choirs and served as a devoted Deacon, until his health did not allow him to regularly attend services. He enjoyed fishing; hunting wild game; and playing different card games. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. No one was a stranger, as he made friends easily. He was kind, generous, and fun-loving, and he was a dapper dresser.

He was preceded in death by both his parents; by all 10 of his siblings (Robert, Fletcher, Jr., Rita, Myrtle, Walter, Clifton (Skinny), Ruth, Irene, Agnes, and Raymond (Chubby); his oldest daughter, Nancy Wharton; his nephew, James (Bunk) Baynard; his ex-wife Marguerite Baynard; and his daughter-in-law, Shirley Baynard.

He is survived by his 6 remaining children: Ralph, Jr.; James (Robin); Sharon (Bobby); John (Annie); Peggy (William); and Elder Alfred (Evangelist Mary Ann); 17 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; a devoted friend, Ruth Majors and her family; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends, all of which are too numerous to list. The family would like to thank Seasons Hospice, the staff of Milford Center, Bishop Miles, and the Union Baptist Church family for their love & devotion.

Lovingly Submitted, The Family
