Age 78 of Wilmington DE passed peacefully on January 15, 2018, surrounded by her beloved family. Rita was born in Wilmington, DE on February 2, 1939, to the late Catherine August Rhodes and Elmer Harrison Rhodes. She was a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School and went on to work at Wilmington Hospital where she met her loving husband Leon of 53 years.
Rita was a devout Catholic who participated in her church, the Visitation Monastery and Divine Mercy. Rita was a mother to eight of her own children and a foster parent to many others. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, with whom she loved spending time. Rita enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her cheesecake and cinnamon buns. She loved being outside in her flower garden or on her swing in the yard watching for Cardinals and Blue Jays. Most of all she loved spending time with her husband, Leon.
Rita is preceded in death by her husband Leon Minner, son in law Sakalia Peniata, brothers, Rev. George V Rhodes, Jerry, Henry, and Joey; and her sisters Helen Setting, Regina Fischer, and five other siblings who died in infancy.
She is survived by her children, Nora Burke Peniata, Patrick Rhodes (Carol), Lauretta (Laurie) Morgan, (William T III), Michele Strum (Matt B), Duncan Douglas (Katie), Leonard Minner (Lynette), Cathy Doyle (Chris), Jill Foster (Dave); 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Marie Catullo, Sr. George Mary OSF, Margaret Haughney and Sr. James Ann Taggart OSF; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere 19805, on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 10:00 am. Friends may call on Friday, January 19, from 6-8 pm at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19805. Interment will be in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, 8 Old Church Rd., Wilmington, DE 19807, following the Mass.
In Lieu of flowers the family supports the memorial contributions in Rita’s name to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America
