Obituary for Thomas J. Murphy
Thomas J. Murphy, Sr.
Age 88 of Elsmere
Passed away peacefully on December 1, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born in the Rockford section of Wilmington to the late Henry and Edna (Steele) Murphy. Tom worked his entire life at Bancroft Mills, later the Wilmington Finishing Company, until his retirement in 1991. Tom faithfully served his country in the Army during the Korean War where he received a purple heart.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Henry, and sisters, Madlyn Woodruff and Julia Erksine.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Anna “Doris” (Bacon) Murphy; his sons, Thomas Jr. (Melani), Patrick (Linda), and Mark; and his daughter, Ann. He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Noel Kennedy (Scott), Colleen Murphy, Amanda Pyle (Michael), Danielle Sacci (Robert), Michael Murphy (Olivia), Joseph Murphy (Kerri), Joshua, Timothy, John, Ian and Katie Murphy; and two great-grandchildren, Toni and Asher Sacci. Tom is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Bacon, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi R.C. Church, 901 New Rd., Elsmere, on Friday, December 9 at 11:30 am. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere from 10:00am - 11:00am. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made in Tom’s name to Corpus Christi R.C. Church, 901 New Rd., Elsmere, DE 19805.
