Obituary for Elizabeth G. "Betty" Levering (Grussemeyer)

Elizabeth G. "Betty" Levering (Grussemeyer)
Elizabeth “Betty” G. Levering

Age 78, of Wilmington, DE joined the love of her life in heaven on Friday, July 23, 2010. She was surrounded by her loving and devoted family.

Born in Wilmington, on February 26, 1932, Betty was the daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte Grussemeyer. Betty graduated from Wilmington High School in 1949 and married her childhood sweetheart, Richard Levering, Sr., in 1950.

Betty’s family was the center of her life. She was kind, trusting, caring, loving, and compassionate. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being called “Mummsy” by her children. She had many hobbies including sewing, ceramics, reading, and going to the beach. She was an avid gardener whose touch made everything grow. Betty’s strong faith in God was evident in the way she lived her life. Her greatest joys were children and animals.

Betty was mainly a full-time homemaker until her children were older when she worked part-time for Avon, later as a cafeteria worker, and more recently as a nanny. When her husband, Richard, was alive he ran his own part-time jewelry repair business with Betty who also was an avid collector of antique jewelry. She cared deeply about her neighbors and community and served on the Elsmere Township Board, advocating the playground at the Elsmere Library. She also volunteered at the Ladies Auxiliary in Hockessin.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband in 1993. She is survived by her four children; her daughter, Linda E. Mahan and her husband William M.; another daughter, Sharon Levering-Stampone; and her two sons; Richard M. Levering, Jr., and Shawn J. Levering. Betty is also survived by her 10 grandchildren; Allison, Jennifer, Danny, Eric, Andrew, William, Crystal, Michelle, Shawn Collen, and Megan; her two brothers, William Grussemeyer and Joseph Grussemeyer and his wife Ann; and many nieces and nephews. Her close feline friends, Kitty and Jenn will be lost without her.

Betty was a strong woman who fought her disease with all her strength.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Peniel United Methodist Church, 115 E. Market St., Newport on Friday morning, July 30th at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Thursday evening, July 29th from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment in Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.
